What is TOP®?
Wyman’s Teen Outreach Program® has three essential goals:
1. Promote Healthy Behavior
2. Teach Life Skills
3. Promote Sense of Purpose
The evidence-based program supports academics, but emphasizes life skills — resiliency, compassion, conflict resolution skills, and goal setting. Teens are divided by age groups and participate in clubs once a week for activities, discussion and volunteer service learning. The program has proven to help teenagers stay focused on their future and succeed in school.
Who is eligible?
All Shreveport-Bossier residents between the ages of 12 and 17.
What is required?
- Registration and a parent orientation
- Weekly attendance at club meetings
- Minimum of 20 hours of community service per year
- A pre- and post-survey of what you’ve learned
What happens at the weekly meetings?
Lots of activities and discussion. You will be divided into groups according to your age, so you’ll be with your peers. This is YOUR group, and you steer the discussion. You also get to plan your own community service projects.
Where will the weekly meetings be held?
They are in community centers throughout Shreveport-Bossier. Some of that will depend on interest, so get your friends to register to have one in your neighborhood!
What does evidence-based mean?
That means studies have shown the following results in teenagers who participate in the TOP® program:
• 52% Reduction in the risk of suspension
• 60% Reduction in the risk of course failure
• 53% Reduction in the risk of pregnancy or fathering a child
