Every year $9.9 billion is spent to hospitalize people with the five most common mental health and substance abuse diagnoses. Volunteers of America of North Louisiana operates programs and several residential facilities to assist those with mental illness better integrate into the community and stay out of the hospital.

These outpatient and community-based services are for adults and children who have been dealing with a serious mental illness for at least six months. Services help reduce symptoms of mental illness, develop healthy relationships, and provide crisis support. These services can be paid for through Louisiana Medicaid.

Resource center that is client operated and increases access to other community resources while empowering clients to take their own responsibility for their recovery. Provides a place for self-help, advocacy, resource/referral information, formal/informal education, and recreational activities; in partnership with LSU Health Sciences Center-Department of Occupational Therapy. Supports mental health clients in recovery by promoting independent living and contributing to the community through meaningful activities including employment, volunteer work or internships. Drop ins are welcome. The center is open from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday-Friday.
