H2O – Homeless Street Outreach Event

What is it?

In August 2013, Volunteers of America Homeless Outreach Program began hosting this street outreach event called H2O – Helping 2 Overcome Homelessness.  The idea of this event was to provide instant on-site services to the homeless community on their turf and their terms.  This event provides basic essentials such as hygiene items, clothing, shoes and food. Chronically homeless individuals with mental illness are able to enroll into our PATH program, all homeless or imminently homeless persons can gain access to housing referrals and resources, mental health care, medical screenings, haircuts, HIV testing and also ministry through local churches and youth groups. Each month our partners, volunteers and participants have grown.  H2O serves 50-65 adults monthly and works with other agencies and the Central Louisiana Homeless Coalition in a colloborative effort to end homelessness in our community.

Do you need help?

We are ALWAYS looking for volunteers, as well as agencies or small businesses that could offer an instant on-site service.  Services that are needed would be hair cuts, general medical testing such as blood pressure and blood sugar checks, laundry and shower facilities that are portable or that they could be directed to and any other basic human needs not afforded to those living on the street.

Sponsorship of this monthly event would enable the event to grow, provide additional services and resources to those we serve.  Volunteers to provide sandwiches or prepared food items are needed as well.

What do you need?

Many local churches, school groups, youth organizations and friends have sponsored drives to supply everything from socks, blankets, coats to non-perishable food items.  Please see our list of needs below and consider donating some of these items or coordinating a drive.  If your group would like to participate monthly or even once please contact us at the number or email below and we will be happy to help!

Each month we focus on certain items that are needed depending on the season or needs.  We will gladly accept all donations of any items listed below at any time.  We simply ask that you limit clothing donations to the items on the list.  Thank you!
